It was an honor to photograph the beautiful Hawaii wedding celebration of Erika and James married on Friday, July 5th, 2013, on the stunning waterfront of Papohaku Beach Park. Maui’s neighbor island Molokai is incredibly beautiful and flying to and from the island on a small plane was an adventure in itself. While I usually shoot destination weddings on Maui, Erika and James’ special day was a welcome change of pace.
Together since 2008, the couple met shortly after Erika began working in Kalaupapa National Park. They fell in love during a volunteer conservation weekend, which isn’t the typical backdrop for the beginning of a romance. Hawaii is so beautiful, though, that I suppose anywhere can be the right setting for a love story!
James proposed on December 9th, 2011, but not until the couple had completed the Honolulu Marathon they’d spent four months preparing for. After running with the South Sea pearl engagement ring in his hydration bag for the full 26.2 miles, the exhausted couple listened to Jake Shimabukoro play the ukelele at Kapiolani Park. Moments later, James got down on one knee to ask Erika if she would marry him.
During the ceremony, modern and traditional rituals combined to honor the couple’s Hawaiian, Filipino and Jewish heritages. This blend of customs and backgrounds were ideal for photographing a unique, vivid Hawaiian wedding. Thanks to the couple’s supportive friends and family, the wedding was largely DIY, from the florals to the cake.
